My Approach to Helping
Anxiety and stress affect everyone.
Whatever the cause- relationships, school, work, social, medical issues, existential or spiritual crisis, loss of any kind- it can be overwhelming. Important obligations and events might be avoided. Communication and connection can be compromised. Self-esteem, sleeping patterns, energy level, and mood all may suffer.
I specialize in the treatment of anxiety and stress reduction, but also help people with: anger, depression, phobias, OCD, addiction, PTSD, relationship difficulties, spiritual and existential crises, panic attacks, ADHD, chronic medical conditions (gastric, migraines, tinnitus, POTS, etc.), and many other problems. Very often, symptoms and issues overlap and are correlated.
More Info About My Practice
When you work with me, we will collaborate to focus on the challenging areas of your life, manage stresses from your environment and body, and develop strategies to overcome unhelpful patterns of thought and behavior. Through this work it will be possible to experience relief, become happier, and evolve as a person. While I prefer to see clients in my office, I also provide online therapy on a HIPAA compliant video platform. I see clients age 14 and up.
To experience relief it will be important to understand the nature of anxiety. So often I meet with clients who have had previous therapy experience, but without ever having learned why anxiety exists or how it it functions within the mind and body. Once you possess this knowledge, we can more effectively implement strategies for change.
The word “mindfulness” has been in vogue for some time now. However, there are very few therapists who actually practice it, formally. In my (admittedly biased) opinion, it is of vital importance to work with a therapist who has a consistent mindfulness practice, most likely meditation of some kind. Otherwise, it’s kind of like going to a personal trainer who has never exercised before. They may understand that exercise is healthy, but have no true experience. In order for the power of mindfulness strategies to work, you need a good coach
I have been practicing meditation daily since 2001. Having benefited from various traditions, I currently facilitate a secular meditation group in the Wilmington area. I spent part of my career bringing mindfulness to a local drug and alcohol rehabilitation center, and have trained in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) with Jon Kabat-Zinn, the pioneer of contemporary mindfulness work.
What I Love about Being a Psychotherapist
We tend to live our lives without ever knowing our true selves, lost in misguided negative self-beliefs. Psychotherapy helps us to awaken, recognize our potential, and find direction. This process may take time and effort, but I believe it to be the most fruitful, worthwhile work one can embark upon.
