My Approach to Helping
I believe that psychotherapy must respect the wisdom of mind and body, be tailored to your unique history and individual needs and be conducted in an atmosphere of absolute care and respect. I place great value on creating a relationship with you that makes it safe to explore any issue, and express any feeling, trusting that it will be met by understanding, not judgment. I believe that the notion of “radical acceptance” so well articulated by Tara Brach in her book of the same name, is key for emotional healing and a successful psychotherapy process; that, from a place of self knowledge and self acceptance, you can move beyond issues that are a legacy from the past, find peace of mind in the present, and look forward to the future with increasing optimism and hope.
More Info About My Practice
I am insurance reimbursable as a licensed professional. I also work on a sliding scale basis when there is financial need.
Specific Issue(s) I’m Skilled at Helping With
I am particularly adept at helping you move beyond anxiety, depression, and/or self esteem issues that may have resulted from a history of family dysfunction–where there has been abuse, neglect, alcoholism, or other trauma. To accomplish this, we need to honor all of your thoughts and feelings, as well as the wisdom of your body. This approach makes it possible not only to safely access the memories that are the foundation of your current distress, but also to discover what you need in order to heal. (See my article “Healing Early Trauma” at www.integrativepsychotherapy-nm.com.)
In addition, I have extensive experience helping couples rekindle the spark that initially brought them together, rebuild trust when that has been lost, and rediscover the joy of a mutually loving and satisfying relationship.
Theoretical Influences that Guide My Work
I have a broad range of training in relational, psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, and mind-body approaches to therapy (EMDR, AEDP, psychomotor and hypnosis) that I draw upon as needed to support you in your healing process. I also have a strong background in contemplative psychotherapy, which emphasizes the importance of mindfulness and meditation for understanding ourselves and finding peace of mind. I believe we all have an inner wisdom that knows exactly what we need not only to survive, but to thrive in the world. In psychotherapy we work together to help you follow that wisdom in order to find a more fulfilling, satisfying and meaningful life.
