    My Approach to Helping

It’s often a difficult decision to begin therapy, yet this can also mark an exciting turning point during a rough time of life. Researching a therapist who matches your needs is important, and I welcome you here as you read about my therapy style.

My approach to therapy begins with seeing the challenges of life as opportunities for growth, since our struggles can often motivate us to draw ever more deeply upon our internal strengths. As therapy begins, my first goal is to understand fully my clients’ values and life experiences, as well as their struggles and problems. In a respectful environment of no judgement and no blame, problems can be safely explored. Fresh new insights and improved coping skills for managing the complexities of life naturally result from this process.

I practice a collaborative style of therapy, valuing my clients’ input through the entire process. Often this work involves looking closely at patterns of thinking and emotional reactions, with an eye toward increasing conscious awareness of patterns that may keep a person stuck in joyless cycles. My approach is holistic, giving careful attention to the biological, mental and emotional, social and spiritual needs inherent within each of us.

I specialize in working with people facing depression and anxiety, grief and losses, other challenging life transitions, and relationship issues. In addition, I work with those who are doing the hard and important work of healing from trauma.

Many of the people I see in therapy are dealing with specific and current troubling events. Others come ready to tackle broad, long-term challenges. In my experience, both types of situations are excellent reasons to enter therapy and to seek support in handling life’s difficulties with strength and grace.
