    My Approach to Helping

Marriage counseling is my specialty and my passion. I utilize the techniques developed by Dr. John Gottman, based on his 30 years of research and treatment, and am a Level 3 Practitioner in the Gottman Method Couples Therapy. What continues to amaze me is the power and speed with which this technique helps couples.

    More Info About My Practice

Gottman Method Couples Therapy starts with three 90-minute assessment sessions in which I see the couple together at first, then individually and then together for the remainder of treatment. If we decide to work together, we usually have weekly sessions. Six to ten sessions is usually enough time to work through marital issues. As for who ends the treatment… If I think we have reached an impasse or success, I would bring that up for the couple to consider. In the end, it is always the couple’s decision. I do not believe that counseling should go on for extended periods of time.

    Had a Negative Therapy Experience?

A number of my clients have sought couples counseling from pastoral counselors, social workers and therapists who say they offer marriage therapy. They are discouraged when nothing seems to work. Counselors who haven’t been trained in and specialized in marriage therapy simply do not have the skills to help couples. It’s a little like going to your family doctor for heart surgery. You need someone who has worked and trained in this area for a number of years.

Important Factors for Choosing a Therapist

Research and my own experience shows that the single most important factor leading to successful therapy is the relationship between the therapist and the clients.
What seems to matter most is the connection you have with that counselor. If that is not a positive one, then all the therapeutic models won’t help. This is why it is important to interview more than one therapist to find a good fit.
