    My Approach to Helping

I am an experienced psychotherapist with an immense amount of education and training. I have expertise in the areas of general psychotherapy, eating disorders, sexual disorders, trauma, post traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and depression. I work with individuals, couples and families. In my work, I utilize multiple perspectives and schools of thought and am an active participant in the therapy. I believe that successful psychotherapy is the result of a healthy collaboration between client and therapist based on authenticity and creativity.
I am effective, responsive and empathic and have the skills needed to assist you in your therapeutic process. I am a firm believer in the power of psychotherapy and its capacity to allow us to grow, to change what’s not working and to live the lives we truly desire.

    More Info About My Practice

Deborah Schweiger-Whalen accepts Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Mexico and Presbyterian Health Plan.
For clients not utilizing insurance, I work with you to utilize any out-of-network mental health benefits you may have through your insurance plan.

Specific Issue(s) I’m Skilled at Helping With

I am highly specialized in the treatment of eating disorders (Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder) and all of the issues associated with disordered eating (Body Image Issues, Compulsive Exercise, Cutting). I have a great deal of training and expertise in this area and have been working in the field of eating disorders for 12 years. I am a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist through the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals. I have presented on the subject at several national conferences and continue to receive advanced training. In addition, I’m currently evolving ZEPHYRUS of SANTA FE, a full service, highly individualized program for individuals with disordered eating.
I am also a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist through the International Institute for Trauma and Addiction Professionals. This credential defines me as being skilled in working with problematic sexual behavior. The study of sexual compulsivity and sexual anorexia has greatly enhanced my work with eating disorders. My approach is extremely integrated and involves the psychological, cognitive and somatic aspects of healing.

What I Love about Being a Psychotherapist

I consider myself to be a gifted therapist able to connect with people and their struggles. I believe that this is the result of practicing in a profession that inspires and challenges me every day. I feel blessed to be in a field dedicated to healing. My life is deeply enriched by the work I do on every level. Each client teaches me about what it means to be human and about vulnerability, pain, inner strength and perseverance. Being a therapist is a wonderful fit for me and suits my nature perfectly. The intellectual rigor and opportunities for professional and personal growth are endless. It is with gratitude and respect that I approach my therapeutic work. That people allow me into their inner worlds, the risks people take in order to grow and shed pain, is never lost on me. My work and my clients give me great hope.

On the Fence About Going to Therapy?

Within the context of our work together, I will be present with you in several ways. I’ll want to learn about you, your history and about how life is for you now. Together, we will participate in a relationship that is different from others. In this relationship you can expect privacy, safety and complete confidentiality. Feeling grounded in that space you will begin to share in ways that may previously have been difficult for you. Your time in therapy is about you and for you. You’ll be able to focus on yourself and gain new perspectives. This will allow for greater exploration of who you are in relationships and who you want to be. This kind of therapeutic lens will assist you in developing a strong sense of what feels good and safe in relationships as well as what feels painful and unsafe.

Everyone comes to therapy seeking answers to complex questions about who they are. We want to understand why we think and feel the way we do. We might be aware that we don’t always take good care of ourselves or even that we are engaging in self-destructive behaviors. We know that change is needed but aren’t sure how or what to change.
Therapy is the place we all go to when we recognize that we need support in order to grow and become more whole.
